SPY x FAMILY

Source: Manga
Animation Company: Wit Studio x CloverWorks
Website: https://spy-family.net/
Premiere: Apr 9, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Action, Comedy, Supernatural, Thriller
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

Everyone has a part of themselves they cannot show to anyone else.

At a time when all nations of the world were involved in a fierce war of information happening behind closed doors, Ostania and Westalis had been in a state of cold war against one another for decades. The Westalis Intelligence Services’ Eastern-Focused Division (WISE) sends their most talented spy, “Twilight,” on a top-secret mission to investigate the movements of Donovan Desmond, the chairman of Ostania’s National Unity Party, who is threatening peace efforts between the two nations.

This mission is known as “Operation Strix.” It consists of “putting together a family in one week in order to infiltrate social gatherings organized by the elite school that Desmond’s son attends.”

“Twilight” takes on the identity of psychiatrist Loid Forger and starts looking for family members. But Anya, the daughter he adopts, turns out to have the ability to read people’s minds, while his wife, Yor, is an assassin! With it being in each of their own interests to keep these facts hidden, they start living together while concealing their true identities from one another.
World peace is now in the hands of this brand-new family as they embark on an adventure full of surprises.

Eva: AT LONG LAST!!!!!!! Oh man I’m so excited to see Anya’s signature expressions animated and voiced in full glory, it’s going to be so much fun! I am even more thrilled to see it will be getting a split-cour treatment, so we’re not stuck with just twelve/thirteen episodes! The more of SPY x FAMILY, the better! 😀

Berry: That synopsis is a lot more dramatic than I imagined. Everyone and their mama won’t stop talking about this series. I sort of know what it is but I’m also not that familiar with it. With all the hype, I really do want to check this out so I’m looking forward to it.

Shadow: It was only a matter of time before this became an anime and I am incredibly stoked for this. I absolutely love the manga and is one of the few that have made me cackle on so many different occasions. Not only is it funny, but it’s incredibly heartwarming which is funny in that of itself considering it revolves around a spy, an assassin and an esper hiding their identities from each other. Though I guess the spy and the assassin can’t really hide their identities from the esper lol. I hope the anime can pull off the jokes because I will be so disappointed if the anime can’t make me laugh as hard as I do from just reading the manga. Either way, I’m excited to see what the anime can add to this already amazing series.

Quietcupcake: I have been seeing this everywhere and I’m so excited to see it getting an adaption! The manga is currently on my backlog, but maybe the the anime is just what I need to pick it up even sooner. It just looks so fun and charming! I hope it’s a stand out series!

Kazanova: Ooh! I’ve been waiting to see the manga get the anime adaptation! I am so enjoy reading the manga, and there’s no way I’m gonna miss watching the anime!

Dance Dance Danseur
ダンス・ダンス・ダンスール

Animation Company: MAPPA

Premiere: April 8, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Drama, Romance, Slice of Life, Sports
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

Danseur noble–a ballet dancer qualified to dance the role of the prince. Second-year junior high school student Murao Junpei was fascinated by ballet as a boy, but gave up on dancing after his father’s death, as he had to become a man. However, one day, a beautiful transfer student named Godai Miyako appears before him. Miyako takes notice in Junpei’s love of ballet and invites him to dance with her. Along with Miyako’s cousin Mori Ruou, he begins his career as a full-fledged ballet dancer, with the aim of becoming the world’s best dancer–the Danseur noble! Only those who have sacrificed everything are permitted to stand in the beautiful and harsh world of classical ballet. What will be the fate of a total beginner like Junpei?!

Eva: [SLAMS NAME DOWN ON POSSIBLE BLOGGER] I don’t think anyone has any idea how badly I’ve been wanting to see more dancing series, and BALLET of all things since Princess Tutu!!!! SIGN ME UP!!!!!!!!!

Berry: This caught my attention simply because we don’t see many anime about dance, and especially about ballet. The only other anime mostly focusing on dance, Ballroom e Youkosou, I couldn’t really get into so I’m hoping this one will keep my interest the whole time. But I like seeing different things like this!

Quietcupcake: Okay, okay, when I first saw the promotional poster for this I was kind of hesitant about it. Sports anime is really all over the spectrum, but this trailer??? Hell yeah! Sign me up! I am an absolute sucker for series where people find or re-ignite their passions. I’m really interested in seeing how everything plays out and if they will give ballet justice!

Summer Time Render
サマータイムレンダ

Source: Manga
Animation Company: OLM
Website: https://summertime-anime.com/
Premiere: April 15, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Action, Drama, Mystery, Supernatural, Thriller
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

A tragic incident calls a young man named Shinpei back to his hometown on the remote island of Higotoshima, Japan. But something sinister awaits upon his return, and a chilling sequence of events unfolds that will have dire consequences for Shinpei, for Japan, and for the entire world!

Berry: Man I love how trippy the PV gets. I always love a mystery so of course this one piqued my interest. If it weren’t for that, maybe I would pass on it depending what else the story would be but thankfully I changed my mind. I just love how weird it looks, and visually it looks real pretty too. I’ll check it out and hopefully it doesn’t go off the deep end.

Shadow: So I went into watching the PV without knowing anything about this series and at first I was gonna be like: Oh this looks nice and Hanae is voicing the main guy. I’ll probably give it a shot- Until all the freaky stuff started happening so maybe I’ll just pass on this…

Quietcupcake: Honestly, I’ve been going back and forth on my feelings for this anime and at this point I’m just curious as to what this anime is going to bring to the table. I’m probably going to watch the first few episodes just to see if this is something I’m interested in. But there seems to be a lot at play with all the supernatural elements, that I’m worried that the series might bite off more than it can chew… But! I shouldn’t give up on it just yet. If anything I just wanna know why that one girl in the trailer has a gun.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War -Ultra Romantic- (S3)
Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Ultra Romantic | かぐや様は告らせたい-ウルトラロマンティック-

Source: Manga
Animation Company: A-1 Pictures
Website: https://kaguya.love/
Premiere: April 9, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Comedy, Psychological, Romance, Slice of Life
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis: The third season of Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensaitachi no Renai Zunousen.

Shadow: I don’t even need to watch the PV, I am HYPED for this new season. This is also another series that has made me cackle on more than one occasion both in anime and manga. Despite the ongoing joke of the two main leads trying to force the other one to confess first, they somehow make it so that it doesn’t get stale and there is ACTUAL progression. Small progress, but still progress nonetheless. Each season just seems to build upon the other and that just says a lot about the writing. I can’t wait to continue the coverage for this series~

Quietcupcake:  Rip me. I need to go back and finish season 2. But I’m excited to see that Kaguya-sama is getting another season! This anime has a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to see how things continue to play out!

To Become a Real Heroine! The Unpopular Girl and the Secret Task
Heroine Tarumono!: Kiraware Heroine to Naisho no Oshigoto
ヒロインたるもの!〜嫌われヒロインと内緒のお仕事〜

Source: Other
Animation Company: Lay-duce
Website: https://honeyworks-tvanime.com
Premiere: April 7, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Music
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3 | PV 4
Synopsis:

Hiyori left her hometown to pursue her passion, track and field, by enrolling in Tokyo’s Sakuragaoka High School. Looking for a part-time job in Tokyo, she ended up working as an apprentice manager for her classmates (and LIP×LIP members) Yuujirou Someya and Aizou Shibasaki. The story revolves around the coming-of-age of Hiyori (as she juggles school, extracurricular life, and managing) and LIP×LIP (as they shine on stage).

Eva: Shadow been showing me all sorts of Honeyworks MVs so I’m definitely excited to see this. Hopefully it turns out well because I would definitely like to see the other groups get their own respective adaptions!

Berry: I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s the messy hair, but I find the protagonist so adorable. Anyway, I know nothing about Honeyworks and the characters except for hearing a few of their songs, and HHW’s Romeo cover in Bang Dream! by that LipxLip group. This anime didn’t interest me at first, but it does look kinda cute. If enough people say it’s good, I’ll maybe check it out.

Shadow: I’ve been keeping up with the Honeyworks mv’s for a while now and it’s nice to see them get yet another anime. Especially since this one revolves around idols. Which is my current weakness considering I’ve just been stuck in Idolish7 and Ensemble Stars purgatory for a while now. However, unlike those two series… the main idol group we’re following is a bit… dickish for a lack of better words. They treat their manager TERRIBLY just because she’s from the countryside. So I am eager to see how their relationship grows and rooting for the manager to show them what she’s really made of. The artstyle is a little basic with how flat they come across, but hopefully they can make it work. There was a time where I was obsessed with this group’s songs before ft4 happened, so it’ll be fun to see how the anime translates their performances and if we get to see the other idols in this world as well.

Quietcupcake: Hiyori is precious and I’m rooting for her all the way. I’m not gonna lie, as someone with bushy eyebrows, I just wanna root for her even more. Go Hiyori Go!! But in all seriousness, this anime looks really refreshing and I’m looking forward to an idol based series that focuses on the manager rather than just the group they are working for. I want to dive a little deeper into other things, but at the same time, I’m looking forward to seeing how Hiyori juggles all of this on top of her school work, track, and just dealing with troublesome idols!

Artemis is constructing a space elevator to link the Moon and Earth, and Empress is ordered to destroy the space elevator before its completion. If the elevator is completed, the hordes of giant mechanized forces being mass-produced on the Moon will descend upon Earth

Kazanova: Honestly speaking, I’m not fond of the first Black Rock Shooter TV series for many reasons. However, the trailer of this BRS anime got me interested. Though CG-animated anime can be a hit or miss for me, I’ll give this new BRS anime a try.

The Eye-Catchers

Aoashi
アオアシ

Source: Manga
Animation Company: Production I.G
Website: https://aoashi-pr.com/
Premiere: April 9, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Sports
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

Ashito Aoi is a young, aspiring soccer player from a backwater town in Japan. His hopes of getting into a high school with a good soccer club are dashed when he causes an incident during a critical match for his team, which results in their loss and elimination from the tournament. Nevertheless, he catches the eye of someone important who happened to be visiting from Tokyo. How will things turn out for Ashito?

Eva: I’m trying to remember the last soccer series I really enjoyed, and honestly it’s been a loooooonnnnnggg time since. I’m hearing a lot of promise about this series from those who have read the manga, so I am excited to see what this one has in store for us!

Shadow: I’m pretty picky when it comes to sports anime and if I’m not particularly taken by the characters’ designs, I generally pass it by unless the consensus says it’s really good then MAYBE I’ll give it a look. But so far, I’m not really feeling what the PV has to offer for this series.

Quietcupcake: I’ve heard really positive things about this manga, so I already have high hopes for the anime. Plus Production I.G? They have some very impressive series under their belt including in the sports genre. I mean, they did my all time favorite sports series, so could I not be excited ?? But, if I’m honest, the synopsis is pretty generic especially in the genre and the PV looks pretty standard. I’m just really hoping they nail the different elements that make these stories so enjoyable for me to watch.

Love All Play

Source: Novel
Animation Company: Nippon Animation | OLM
Website: https://love-all-play.com/
Premiere: April 2, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Sports
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

The story follows Ryou Mizushima, who was once an obscure badminton player in middle school. He now strives to become a top athlete and take his high school team to the inter-high tournament.

Eva: Since it was announced I was pretty excited to see how this one goes. It will be interesting to see how it measures up to Ryman’s Club, which honestly is the only other badminton show I’ve actually come to enjoy (BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT TIME WE FINALLY GOT A GOOD ONE RIGHT)?!?

Shadow: Again, I’m super picky about the sports anime I watch. But unlike the soccer one, this one does perk my interest just a teeny bit more. Maybe it’s the character designs, but as I said before, I’ll probably wait for a consensus and if I hear it’s good, I’ll most likely give it a go.

Quietcupcake: Ah, okay. Honestly, Love-All-Play is going to have some big badminton shoes to fill especially after Ryman’s Club this past season. But! I enjoy badminton as a sport, so I will definitely give it a go! I’m hoping to have a good time with it!

TIGER & BUNNY SEASON 2
TIGER & BUNNY (タイガー・アンド・バニー)

Source: Original
Animation Company: Bandai Namco Pictures
Website: http://www.tigerandbunny.net/TB2/
Premiere: April 8, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis: The second season of Tiger & Bunny.

Fighting for peace — and their sponsors — the odd couple of Wild Tiger and Barnaby continue to work as superheroes. But with the number of superheroes increasing around the world, how will these two veterans fare!?

Note: Since it’s being released on Netflix, the first 13 episodes of the season will be released all at once on April 8th worldwide, and the season will have a total of 25 episodes!

Eva: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! I ALWAYS KNEW IN MY HEART THERE WOULD BE A SECOND SEASON!!!!!! SURE IT TOOK LIKE 10 YEARS, BUT THAT’S BESIDES THE POINT! It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of role Kotetsu will have this season given his the circumstances of his powers, but I am looking forward to it! The good news is, I had the chance to rewatch the show recently, so I already got a refresh of Season 1. All I need to do is to watch the movie and I’m good to go!

Berry: I just recently watched Tiger & Bunny for the first time not that long ago, and it was good. Had its faults but it was a fun watch, but I kinda agree with Shadow that I’m not sure about this sequel. I’ll watch it anyway but I wonder if it was necessary.

Shadow: Hmm… I’m not sure how I feel about a continuation since the first season wrapped up things fairly well. Though they did leave it open for a possible second season and I’m surprised they left it at that for so long since Tiger and Bunny is supposedly the #1 favorite anime in Japan (at least that was the case a few years ago). So It’ll be interesting to see where they take the series now considering Kotetsu’s powers have been on a constant decline.

Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie
Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san | 可愛いだけじゃない式守さん

Source: Manga
Animation Company: Doga Kobo
Website: https://shikimori-anime.com/
Premiere: April 10, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

The ultimate “heartthrob girlfriend” appears! Naturally unlucky high school student Izumi’s girlfriend is his classmate Shikimori. She has a beautiful smile and kind personality and always seems happy when she’s with Izumi. She’s a pretty, cute, and loving girlfriend, but when Izumi’s in trouble… she transforms into a super cool “heartthrob girlfriend!” The fun lives of the cute and cool Shikimori, Izumi, and their good friends never end!

Eva: The PV looks quite entertaining to me, so hopefully it’ll be a fun watch.

Shadow: After seeing the anime announcement for this, I decided to look and see what it was like in the manga mostly due the main couple being my ship aesthetic. Sadly, it was just kind of the same joke over and over again without much really happening. And if you like that, then this is the series for you. But for me, the same joke gets tiring after a while without much else going for it and I’ll most likely just stick with Kaguya-sama and Spy x Family for the laughs and romantic comedy.

Kazanova: I never read the manga before, but the trailer got my attention since it seems to be the type of romance comedy that I like, and similarly with the dynamic between the two main characters.

Aharen-san is Indicipherable
Aharen-san wa Hakarenai | 阿波連さんははかれない

Source: Manga
Animation Company:
Website:
Premiere: April 2, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

The story follows the “indecipherable” daily life of the short and quiet Reina Aharen and Raidou who sits next to her. Aharen is not so good at gauging the distance between people, and Raidou initially felt some distance between the two of them. One day, when Raidou picked up the eraser that Aharen had dropped, the distance between them suddenly became uncomfortably close.

Quietcupcake: Not gonna lie, but this reminds me of Tonari no Seki-kun, a short little series which was just a delight to watch. I’m a fan of just letting characters have fun and do silly little things. I’m kind of on the fence about this one though – I think it’ll be pretty light-hearted, but already in the trailer I can see that there will probably be some jokes that I might not vibe with. I’ll probably check it out at the end of the season if people enjoyed it.

Kazanova: This one also seems to be the type of romance comedy that’ll give me a good laugh. While the art style is not really to my liking, I think the two main characters and their relationship seems unique, and that’s enough to make me want to try watching this anime.

Amane has previously attended horse racing academies in various countries. The show follows these three 15-year-old boys at the academy.

Eva: ….Somehow I almost forgot to add this to my list this season! When it was first announced I was pretty intrigued, and I still am, so I will certainly be checking this out. Either way, as always it is always exciting to see more sports being explored in anime.

Quietcupcake: This series has a special place in my heart as being one of my first coverages here on the blog! I’m so excited to see it make a return! The characters are a lot of fun, and I’m excited to spend some more time watching Yuuko achieve her goal of beating the magical girls. Although, it may be a little hard for me to make an entry each week – I’ve learned that overtime a series based on little shorts is a little harder to blog about. But I will have to see what the first few episodes bring before I decide!

Eva: I’ve read a bit of the manga, and it’s pretty sweet so I’m looking forward to this!

Quietcupcake: Oh! This looks really sweet! I’d love to watch a series that focuses on connecting with others through food. I’ll keep an ear out for what others are saying, and if people are enjoying it, I’ll definitely give it a go!

Berry: I have no clue what this anime will possibly be, but the animation is pretty and I like the song in the PV. I won’t put my name down for this one since I’m really not too sure, but I’ll watch the first episode to see if it’ll appeal to me with the story, whatever it may be.

Website: https://koiseka-anime.com/
Premiere: April 8, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Action, Comedy, Ecchi, Romance, Supernatural
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

There are two sides to every coin…light vs. dark, good vs. evil, love vs. hate. Sometimes the line between the two grows thin…and it’s so, so easy to cross. So it’s no surprise that Fudo Aikawa, A.K.A. Red Gelato of the Gelato Five and hero to all people, just may have happened to fall for the villainess and member of the shadow organization Gekko, Desumi Magahara! But when opposites like these attract, there’s more than a few obstacles to their love…! What’s a pair like this to do?

Eva: This looks very silly, but as I mentioned earlier, I’m down for some crazy romcom chaos.

Shadow: I am…. VAGUELY interested because the concept and execution looks so silly. Though the ecchi tag makes me a bit worried, but I might end up looking to see how it is for the first few eps. I mean… it looks kinda cute. >_>

Tomodachi Game
トモダチゲーム

Source: Manga
Animation Company: Okuruto Noboru
Website: https://tomodachi-anime.com/
Premiere: April 6, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Drama, Mystery, Psychological
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

High school student Katagiri Yuuichi, who values friendship above all else, enjoys a fulfilling life with his close friends Sawagiri Shiho, Mikasa Tenji, Shibe Makoto, and Kokorogi Yutori.

However, after a particular incident, they’re dragged into a debt repayment game.

The only way to beat the “Tomodachi Game” is to not doubt their friends. Bound together by solid friendships, the game should’ve been easy, but– The hugely popular comic that sold over two million copies is finally becoming an anime! Will they trust or betray their precious friends? The true nature of humanity is exposed in the ultimate psychological game!

Berry: Now…normally I would be all over this because I love shows like this. But these type of “get forced into playing this horrific game and possibly kill others” stories can be VERY hit or miss. There’s some good ones out there, but there are plenty of bad ones and I’m always very wary of these types of shows now. And the PV didn’t exactly help all that much either. I’ll probably check out the first episode or wait for reactions, I’m just hoping it’ll be worth the time.

Quietcupcake: So….. this is one of those that I have no idea what to expect. I think I’m curious about what it has in store but I don’t know where my expectations land. Psychological games can be fun, but sometimes I feel like they just go a little too far. I think I’m going to check it out, but I might wait a few weeks to see what the general reaction is for the series.

Website: https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/yugioh-gorush/
Premiere: April 3, 2022 (JST)
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis: The eighth anime series in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.

Eva: So… I actually haven’t finished watching YGO SEVENS yet because it has been put on back-burner, which makes checking this out right away to do a First Impression a bit more complicated. Nonetheless, sadly I have already decided I would be skipping on this to continue my focus on finishing up YGO 5D’s (which I will be continue releasing on a monthly basis). All that said, I am honestly not surprised they are making an alien the main character this time. Kind of had a feeling after the whole alien introduction in SEVENS that this would be something they’d play with. Yudias got a cute design at least haha!

Kazanova: YGO Go Rush seems to be an official sequel of SEVENS that I’m still watching. The idea of aliens and especially Yudias’ design got me interested. I wonder how they’ll execute this alien concept Duel Monster.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Eva: Compared to the Winter’s lacklustre lineup, this one definitely feels like there are more to look forward to. I am mostly excited for Spy x Family, Dance Dance Danseur, Aoashi, Love All Play, Fanfare of Adolescence, Heroine Tarumono!, and Tiger & Bunny S2. I am also happy to see some chaotic romcoms to choose from this season like, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie and Love After World Domination and Komi-san S2. As for how many I plan to cover this season, I’m thinking of sticking to two new titles, though I’m not sure which ones they will be yet. And as excited as I am for Tiger & Bunny S2, I am trying to think it through to make sure avoid having too many carry-over titles, otherwise I’ll have no open slots for the summer season that have a lot that I am looking forward to!

Berry: This season is looking to be another slow one for me. There are a few that caught my eye, but for the most part it’s another season where I’ll just relax. The only show that I want to blog would be Summer Time Render, and the only other show that maybe I’d pick up if it impresses me is Healer Girl. If nothing else gets me, I’ll continue my reviews for JJBA: Stone Ocean. Sorry that I’ve kept that on the back burner but I’ll finally complete it before the summer season! That’ll keep my busy until then. Other than that, Spy x Family, Dance Dance Danseur, and maybe Tomodachi Game will be the ones I’ll watch and/or keep an eye on. I’m just excitedly waiting for the summer season.

Shadow: There seems to be quite a few promising titles this season with some very anticipated ones. Especially with how very little interesting titles we got last season aside from the sequel series. Spy x Family, Kaguya-sama and Heroine Tarumono! are the ones I’m most looking forward to. There are a few such as Love After World Domination, S2 of Tiger and Bunny and Love All Play that I have a mild intrigue for, but will probably wait on them to see how the majority consensus is. I wish I could cover all 3, but I’ll most likely be only to stick with just two. Otherwise, I’m excited to see how this season ends up overall.

Quietcupcake: There’s a lot going on this season and I’m happy to see that there is quite the spread! I think Spy x Family is on everyone’s radar right now and I will definitely be adding it to my seasonal list to watch. I’m also pretty happy with the sports line-up with Dance Dance Danseur, Aoashi, and Love All Play. Not every sport anime is a homerun, but I like checking them out because there’s a lot of tropes that I enjoy in those series. I’ll most likely be watching all three this season, but probably only cover 1 for the blog. As to which one?? Ah… that’s still up for debate. But I’m also super excited for Heroine Tarumono!! It just seems like such a charming series that I have really high hopes for it! Aside from that, I’m also very excited for Machikado Mazoku: 2-Choume, but like I mentioned above while it may be fun to watch, sometimes there just isn’t enough to talk about in a single blog post. But we’ll see! And finally, I think my wild card for the season will be Deaimon! I’m really hoping that it will a charming series. But overall, I’m glad to be back, and I’m looking forward to yelling about anime again!

Kazanova: Can’t say much until I watch the anime and will see how my first impression of each anime that interest me. Spy x Family and Black Rock Shooter definitely got my attention the most, but considering everyone here is interested in covering Spy x Family, I think I’ll back out and will choose from the rest of my choices.
