Seasonal Announcements

Happy 13th Anniversary AngryAnimeBitches!

I say it almost every year, but it never ceases to amaze me how long we’ve been around for. Lately I’ve been looking back at some of my older entries and, and I find it so fascinating how much the blog reflects how much we’ve grown as both individuals and as writers. It has been a great privilege and joy to have been writing for as long as I have been, as well as providing a platform for others to tap into their passion. This blog was made to be a place to write and passionately express ourselves, and so the blog will continue on so as long as there’s one person writing. It has been my pleasure to provide a platform for passionate writers and fans of anime to come together, and serving as the Team Leader, I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned doing this, and how much it has helped me grow as a person. That is why I’d like to continue running this blog so as long as I have the passion to do so.

As mentioned last season, we’re a much smaller team now, and with new responsibilities in life things have slowed down considerably, and that’s fine. It’s not so bad to take it easy for an exchange after so many years! After-all, we do need a break from time to time! You might have noticed a while back we have also removed the page for recruiting writers. A few months ago I’ve come to the the decision that we will no longer be recruiting any new writers going forward. This mainly has to do with the fact I no longer have the time to teach the ropes to newcomers as I used to, and two we’ve gotten to the point where I feel it’d be best for us to stick with the team we have now, this way we can decide on what we want to do together.

Now following up what I touched on in the Summer Seasonal Updates: We’re still taking our time working out some of the things we want to do going forward. Life been crazy so a lot of the things we had planned to experiment on this summer had to be postponed, and given our hectic schedule this fall, we’re probably not going to be able to make too much progress on that development this season. So it goes without saying this is something we’re doing very slowly. As mentioned before, we want to make sure we’re committed and have the time to some of the new things we’d like to introduce to the blog, but at the same time we’re not sure we’d rather just do things more leisurely.

On the note of a hectic schedule: Two of us (at different times) will be travelling mid and late fall, so during this period whatever shows are being covered will be put on-hold, and then resumed once we each return from our trips. Fortunately Berry has been working on some Game Reviews behind the scenes that are ready to be released during this time frame!

TLDR;

  • Eva: 3.5 Weeks Break due to Travel Late October – Mid November
  • Quietcupcake: 4 Weeks Break due to Travel Mid-November – Mid December
  • Berry: Releasing Game Reviews between Mid-October and Mid December.
  • Shadow: Will be prioritizing the Fall 2023 titles, and decided to put SSSS. Gridman on-hold until further notice.

Also quick note regarding the Preview Section! Shadow is sick at the moment so I told her to just take it easy and not worry about the deadline. So please don’t be alarmed that her parts of the Preview will be left as Shadow: …” and there being Possible Bloggers “___” blanks. It will remain this way until she’s in better condition to complete it. Thanks for understanding!

Now, she’s making a name for herself solving medical mysteries!

Update Note: The first three episodes of the anime will air back-to-back on October 21.

Eva: [Looks at Premiere Date] Oh crap, I’ll be cutting it close, so I hope I can do the first impression before I leave on my trip!!!! This is another novel I am a HUGE fan of, and one I have been reading (via fan translations) long before JNovel Club picked it up, so I am HYPED for this adaption! The visuals are absolutely stunning so far, so now I just have to hope they do the rest justice! Maomao is an absolutely amazing protagonist, and I’m sure she will greatly entertain you! This is an excellent mystery/political series, so if that’s your cup of tea, you’re in for a treat.

Quietcupcake: Oh, this looks absolutely gorgeous! I’ll be honest in saying that I wasn’t initially interested by the synopsis, but the PV absolutely sold me. This might be a series that I wait until the end of the season to pick up! I can totally imagine this being one that I won’t want to have to wait for new episodes!

Possible Bloggers: Eva I should be able to get the First Impression out, but Ep 2 – 4 (possibly 5, depends on how jet-lagged I am) will be put on-hold until I return from my trip! ; v ;

SPY×FAMILY Season 2

Source: Novel | English Publisher: YenOn (Novel) | SquareEnix (Manga)
Animation Company: Wit Studio | CloverWorks
Website: spy-family.net/tvseries
Premiere: October 7, 2023
Genre: Action, Comedy, Slice of Life, Supernatural
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Synopsis: The second season of SPY×FAMILY.

Eva: I have to agree with Shadow how the anime’s hasn’t been able to land the humour quite the same way as the manga does. It took me a while before I realized that I never finished watching the second cour, which goes to show it wasn’t really high on my list to watch, comparatively to keeping up with the manga on a weekly basis. But I’m very excited for this season because I know the arc that’s coming up is bound to shine. I know the production team is going to have a field-day with it, because they absolutely nail it when it comes to the action!

Shadow: If you’ve read my coverage of the first season, you’ll know that I have strong frustrations with the adaptation. Especially in regards to pacing and how they completely dropped the ball in regards to the comedy, which to me felt like one of the best parts of the manga. Not to mention that the biggest problem is that they tried making this series into an action and plot driven series when it’s actually a gag comedy series. So going into the second season, I’ll keep my expectations low. Though with the arc I hear they’re going to cover, HOPEFULLY it will be better since as I’ve said before in my coverage that they seem to do a lot better with plots when there is more action in it. I’ll still cover this season, but we’ll see if my coverage will remain grumpy or if they’ll do better.

Quietcupcake: I… was really underwhelmed with the second cour of the first season. It was still enjoyable, but after awhile some of the jokes felt pretty samey. I enjoy each member of the Forger family, but by mid cour we were losing the plot. I just didn’t have the same excitement that I had in the beginning. That being said, it is Spy x Family and I’m that the second cour was just more of an inbetweener for something more exciting. I haven’t read the manga, so I don’t know what to expect!

Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku-hen
東京リベンジャーズ 天竺編

Premiere: October 3, 2023
Genre: Action, Drama, Romance, Supernatural
Trailer: PV 1
Synopsis: The third season of Tokyo Revengers.

With a future where Toman has been destroyed by Mikey’s twisted ideas and Takemichi returning to the past, he decides to become stronger in order to stop Kisaki’s plans. On one side, a mysterious gang from Yokohama known as Tenjiku begins to overthrow all the Toman divisions, deciding to destroy all the gangs in Japan, becoming the most powerful and unique.

Kisaki has been planning something for his purposes against Toman, now that he is banned.

Quietcupcake: If you read my reviews for the second season I was,,, disappointed to say the least. Takemitchy was really getting on my nerves and the way everything played out for the Christmas Showdown was entirely underwhelming for me. Of course, there were some good moments that help flesh out some characters, but as a whole it did not live up to the expectations I had placed after watching the first season. But, the final episodes did get me more excited for a third season! I am invested and really hope this third season delivers!!! I am ready to weep !!

Paradox Live THE ANIMATION
パラドックスライブ

Source: Multimedia Project
Animation Company: PINE JAM
Website: paradoxlive.jp/en/animation
Premiere: October 3, 2023
Genre: Music
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2
Synopsis:

Set in the near future…

From the saturated hip-hop culture rises a new movement—the Phantom Live. Using metals called “phantom metals” embedded into their accessories, the rappers create illusions (phantoms) that are linked to their emotions, through the chemical reaction of the metals with their DNA.

However, on the other side, there are those who suffer from “phantom of trauma” as a reaction after using the phantom metals.

Club PARADOX is suddenly back as the stage of the mysterious Paradox Live Battle, 10 years after the club’s disappearance. Four units were invited to compete to win 10 billion yen worth of prize money and a right to challenge the legendary rapper unit called “Buraikan.”

These four groups, who are immensely popular with their respective genres, are BAE, The Cat’s Whisker’s, cozmez, and AkanYatsura. Each individual and as a team have their own reasons on accepting the invitation, and in order to prove that their own music is the number one, they participate in “stage battles.”

The curtains are raised to this illusionary stage battle where light and darkness come together in a swirling frenzy.

Eva: I didn’t have two Rap themed anime facing off in the same season on my bingo card this year. This is going to be very interesting, but also really fun because I’m down to seeing more of this kind of content. It will be interesting to see who comes out on this season’s Rap Battle.

Shadow: One of my friends was a huge fan of this, though I was really confused every time she talked about it. I’m curious to see how this plays out but I’ll keep my expectations low since music series adaptations tend to not bode too well in the quality department.

Quietcupcake: I know very little about Paradox live, except for the stray posts that end up on my feeds. But everything I’ve seen has me absolutely intrigued! I am absolutely living for some of these character designs and can’t wait to see them in action! I’m really hoping this will be a wild ride!

Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima+
ヒプノシスマイク-Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima +

Source: Other
Animation Company: A-1 Pictures
Website: hypnosismic-anime.com
Premiere: October 6, 2023
Genre: Action Music Sci-Fi
Trailer: PV 1
Synopsis: The second season of Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle – Rhyme Anima. Unlike the first season, which depicted the first division rap battle, it will be set after the second Division Rap Battle.

Eva: Not gonna lie, Season 1 was interesting so to speak. It was okay (a bit of a mess), but it did the job of making me interested enough to seek of the music and listen to some of the performances that were broadcast live! (And they were super fun to watch!) I’m curious to see how Season 2 will turn out, especially since it’s being set after the second Division Rap battle… Interesting choice… It perplexed me so I asked Berry about it, and she said: “Why…why would they do that? What.” And frankly I had the same reaction. I wonder what this means… And now with Paradox Live in the mix, it’ll have to be on its toes with this unexpected competitor that might just give HypMic S2 a run for its money.

Shadow: Considering that I didn’t really enjoy the first season, I will probably skip this new season. However, I’m open to watching it if I hear promising things about it or if it’s a lot better.

Quietcupcake: I am so sorry, I watched Hypmic, I promise I did, but I cannot for the life of me remember what the plot is since I haven’t consumed any of it’s content since. I think??? there were aliens involved. I’m pretty sure I had a good time watching it? My brain just won’t let me remember anything besides Doppo. I’ll honestly need to rewatch S1 before jumping into this one.

The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent II

In addition, Sei’s evaluation explodes when she activates a tremendously powerful purification magic in monster subjugation! Being officially recognized as a “saint”, she gains people’s respect as the savior of the Kingdom of Saluntania. Those who watch over and support her are Johann and Jude from the research institute, Yuri from the Imperial Court Mage Division, and Albert Hawke, the “Ice Knight” who is attracted to each other but is still less than a lover. Even after becoming the most important person in the kingdom, Sei remains obsessed with research, but her relationship with Albert gradually deepens, and there is a new development in their love story!?

Eva: [SIGH] Not gonna lie, my interest in this series has waned quite a bit since I’ve last covered the first season. Back then, I had been really enjoying the novel, but sadly I was so disappointed with the execution of Volume 6 and 7 that I kind of fell out of love with it. Despite my gripes with the recent volumes, I am still interested in watching this season– mainly to see if they’ll adapt up to Vol 8 to help me figure out if it’s worth continuing or not. I just hope that they abandon the bizarre fixation on lipshots (I AM STILL NOT OVER THAT)!!!!

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
葬送のフリーレン | Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her? Decades after their victory, the funeral of one her friends confronts Frieren with her own near immortality. Frieren sets out to fulfill the last wishes of her comrades and finds herself beginning a new adventure…

Eva: I haven’t read the manga yet, but I’ve heard a lot of great things about this series. I’ll definitely check this out, and look to read it after watching (though my lack of self control may mean reading it during the show HAHAHAHA).

Shadow: I feel like I’ve heard about this series through a youtuber talking about it since the premise and character design looks familiar. I may give it a watch if I hear the execution is good. I’m always willing to delve into a well written fantasy setting that’s actually not isekai.

Quietcupcake: I am not immune to a good orchestral PV. This is another one that I wasn’t super interested in, but was quickly sold on the visuals and the promotional materials. I am definitely going to keep my eyes on this one for the first couple of weeks!

Eva: I’m actually really interested in watching this one! Actually JNovel Club just announced they’ve picked up the novel, so I definitely want to see if this is something I’d like to pick up.

Eva: When I first heard of this series, I must say it really intrigued me! Seeing a series follow a more  story (aka: no supernatural or sci-fi mixed into this) about firefighters is definitely a refreshing change of pace, so that alone makes it exciting and worth checking out!

Given a second chance at life, Mia decides to rebuild the empire. For the sake of Tearmoon’s future? To save the people from starvation? For all the soldiers who lost their lives in the civil war? No! Everything she does in this life is for the sake of avoiding the guillotine! “F-For me, this should be a piece of cake!” Thus the useless, cowardly, self-serving princess brings about miracle after miracle in her great struggle to save herself in this altered-history fantasy.

Eva: [Laughs Nervously while eyeing Tearmoon Empire Vol 1 on bookshelf] Uh… so I own the first volume, but I actually haven’t read it yet…Hahaha… Oops. I guess I’ll be watching this first. I picked it up to begin with because I heard great things about it.

Synopsis:

The Yuzuki family consists of four brothers: Hayato, Mikoto, Minato, and Gakuto. The eldest son, Hayato, happily lives every day to the fullest. There are tears, laughter and excitement at home, at school, and in the neighborhood!

Quietcupcake: Sometimes, something light-hearted and silly is enough. If I’m being honest, I’m not really really expecting a whole lot from this besides some silly sibling interactions, but I’m hoping for a good time!

Kawagoe Boys Sing
川越ボーイズ・シング

Source: Original
Animation Company: evg | Telecom Animation Film
Website: boys-sing.com
Premiere: October 9, 2023
Genre: Comedy, Music
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Synopsis:

The story is about the Kawagoe School Boys Choir Club and their instructor, a former orchestra conductor named Haruo Hibiki. The club members’ personalities clash, but Haruo helps them grow together through singing, as they aim for the nationals of the Boys Choir contest.

Quietcupcake: This is just me pretending that Aopella!? got an anime. Except it’s choir kids instead of an acapella group. Honestly, I don’t know what to expect from this one. I like choral music, but I have next to no base as to what to compare this to. I can’t find any other series’ evg has animated, and Telecom Animation Film has an okay track record. Even when it comes to the seiyuu, in a very brief research session, most of them aren’t any well known characters. I believe one is Tsukasa Suou from Enstars and there’s also a Hypmic and I☆CHU, but otherwise there isn’t much else to go on! My expectations will probably sit rather low, but I hope that it’s a good time.

To her delight, the first person to greet her is also her favorite character, Claire Francois – the main antagonist of the story! Now, Rae is determined to romance Claire instead of the game’s male leads. But how will her villainous ladylove react to this courtship?!

Eva: [SNORTS] Okay, this actually sounds like a hilarious set-up. The PV got me cracking up, so I’ll give this chaotic romcom a whirl.

Quietcupcake: I, too, am in love with the villainess. But in all seriousness, this just seems like a fun time and a good reason to laugh! I’m willing to give it a chance!

Eva: I have to confess, while I am REALLY excited for it because OMG PRECURES GROWN-UP– I’ve tried to rewatch Yes! Precure 5 for a much needed refresh because I really don’t remember anything, at all, but due to other priorities I haven’t really been able to make much progress. I’ll see if I can somehow finish the rewatch before it airs, but given my schedule and preparation for my upcoming trip, I’m not entirely sure if I’ll have the time and energy to do so. I’ll put my name down for the time being though, just in case I manage to make it work because it would be nice to at least do a first impression on it. I’ll do my best!!!! If not, I’ll try to do so at a different time when my schedule is more favourable for me. q v q

Possible Bloggers: EvaIt’s a race against time, but I’ll do my best! q v q

Overall Thoughts

Eva: Okay I got a lot to cover so first, let’s talk about my schedule for this season! As mentioned in the top of the post: Between late October and mid November, I will be travelling for 3.5 weeks. During this period, I will not have time to write during my trip, so everything will be put on-hold until I get back. For that reason the only title I’m probably going to pick up this season is The Apothecary Diaries. Provided I’m in good health and not horribly jet-lagged, I’ll do my best to catch up to all three episodes within a week’s time. But I do expect myself to be extremely tired so I’d probably only be able to get Ep 4 & 5 out first, and then release 5 & 6 together a bit later than usual, so as long as it’s out before episode 7 airs. I’ll be sure to include further details the First Impression post, and when I get back as a reminder. It’s going to be a hectic schedule, but please be patient with me!

On the flip-side, before the trip, if Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange happens to click with me, I’d like to at least try to cover a bit of it to get my foot in the door to resume the coverage when i get back if I have the time and energy to. At the same time, the other show that’s really hard for me to pass up on is Power of Hope ~Grown-Up Precure ’23~. I know that many of you expected me to jump right into it, (and believe me, I would like to), but as I mentioned earlier, the only way I can do this is if I finish rewatching Yes Precure 5 and it’s sequel Yes! Precure GoGo! I’ll see what I can do though, because this is something I’ve been hungry for (grown-up magical girl) for a longggg time. I have less than a week to somehow pull this off… We’re talking around 80/97 episodes (two seasons combined) within a week… Is that be even possible?! So perhaps the next best option I have is to look into it another time, and cover it during a season that maybe not a lot catches my interest. That’s pretty much my backup plan at the moment. Heck, do we even know yet how many episodes this is supposed to be? I can’t imagine it’d be more than 12-13 episodes, I’d be really surprised if it’s longer than that! Nonetheless, I am going try and see if I can make this work… As of the day I’m writing this, I have thirteen days to pull this off… Looks like I’m gonna have to binge-watch S1 really hard this weekend!

With that said: I’m pleased to see there’s a decent handful of titles I’m interested in watching this season. Honestly I hope that watching Seijo no Maryoku S2 helps me enjoy the series again. It always sucks when you’re invested in something and it just disappoints you. If I wasn’t going to be away for a bit I probably would have tried to cover it regardless of how I feel about the novel at the moment. I’m also looking forward to watching Paradox Live THE ANIMATION, Hypnosis Mic, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and finally Tearmoon Empire! Hopefully they’ll be all be fun to watch!

Shadow: Overall, there’s not that much that interests me personally this season, but hopefully there will be at least one or two series that actually catches my eye. I’ll probably gravitate towards series I’m more or less a little familiar with like Spy x Family season 2 even though I have many gripes about the adaptation and Paradox Live since I’ve at least heard about that series. Other than those two series, not much else really catches my interest on first glance. Though if I hear good things from other series like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Hypnosis Mic or Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange, I may give those a watch. But otherwise, seems like a bit of a dry season for me.

Quietcupcake: There’s actually quite a bit this season! Lots of things managed to catch my interest, but due to my travel, I won’t be able to keep up with entries ; v ; so I’m prioritizing Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku Hen. After all, I’ve already covered the previous two seasons, so what’s another one to add? I’m just really praying that it will be good! I’m also incredibly excited to see so many music based shows this season? We have Paradox Live THE ANIMATION, Hypnosis Mic, and Kawagoe Boy’s Sing. The former two are the most hyped up for the season, but I’m just a sucker for club-themed shows. So even if the latter doesn’t turn out to be that great, at least I know there’s choir anime out there. Next, I’m actually really interested to see how both The Apothecary Diaries and Frieren: Byond Journey’s End play out this season! In both of my thoughts, I mentioned that I wasn’t originally considering them, but the PVs absolutely sold me. I’ll be keeping a close eye on both of them. I want them to be just as stunning as the promotional material! Haha!  And then finally, there are a couple light-hearted series that caught my eyes. I’m not really expecting much out of these, just something that feels refreshing and that will hopefully be a good time. Those are Youth Story of a Family and I’m in Love with the Villainess. Two very different type stories, but I’m hoping to get some good smiles and laughs out of those two. And to throw another one in the mix, My New Boss is Goofy also has my interest for a work-place comedy! All in all, there appears to be plenty to watch this season! The only problem is that I need to find the time to actually watch them all!

Having seen today the [rather long] first episode of “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”, can confirm the visuals are superb, but, above all, the story is captivating although a bit sad. I’ve enjoyed the episode a lot; this is one of my picks for this season, without doubt.

This fall is a pretty solid season. I’m excited to catch up during winter break!
